Treating Droopy Eyelids in Chicago with Dr. Tresley

What Is Ptosis, or Droopy Eyelids?

Ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelids. It occurs when the eyelid falls and covers the pupil and blocks upper vision.

What Are Symptoms I Should Look For?

Common symptoms are eye fatigue due to having to raise the eyebrows and forehead in order to see. Ptosis will also cause the eyelid to close when looking downward in the reading position.

What Causes Ptosis?

In most adults, Ptosis occurs as a result of age-related changes. The opening muscle of the eyelid (levator muscle) becomes weakened and stretches away from its attachment in the eyelid. It is commonly seen in the elderly, after cataract surgery, and in contact lens wearers. Other causes are congenital, neurological, and muscular disease.

What Can Be Done to Correct This Condition?

To correct this condition, Dr. Tresley can surgically reattach the muscle tendon or muscle to its proper position. It is an outpatient or office-based procedure and can be done with or without a skin incision. The goal of Ptosis surgery is to raise the eyelid above the pupil and restore symmetry to the eyelids.
